This book is the culmination of a lifetime of love and lessons that have shaped my personal journey from a young man in crisis to a champion for children. There were critical moments in my story where self-appointed “Hope Dealers” like my mother, Alice Lovelace, and my educator, Dr. Lorraine Wilson, intervened in my projected course to failure. The lessons I learned from them became the foundation of my own work with and for young people facing challenges that they often did not believe they can face alone hopelessness, shame, disability, tragic home life, generally summed up as the trauma, drama, and pain of life. I have put these lessons into my practice of reaching and teaching young people and try to share them with other caring adults who have committed themselves to being the difference in the lives of the children within their sphere of influence. My name is Hasan Davis, and I am a Hope Dealer. This is my story. "For those of us who chose this important work, hope is mandatory. Because, we cannot give what we do not possess." Hasan Davis J.D.

Non fiction isn't usually a "must read" for me, but I couldn't put this one down. The author does a great job of portraying the complexity of his early life and education; the moments when things went well or went badly; the good choices he made and the bad; and especially, the complex interactions between the "hope dealers", people who wanted him to succeed, and the people who very much wanted to hold him back. Even though the author's story is extraordinary, he conveyed hope for all the kids who are getting lost in our educational and justice systems, and I came away with a lot of great ideas of how I can "deal hope" to the young students in my life.Product details

All teachers and all parents would do well to devour this immensely readable autobiography. This is a book long overdue. I cried and laughed out loud as I read his story, often simultaneously. Kudos, Hasan Davis, JD! Thank you for sharing your vital and timely life story with the world.
An inspirational must read book. I couldn't put it down until the last word. I can not wait for it to come out in hard back so I can purchase for gifts. Amazing what a wonderful man he turned out to be.
Thought this book was well written. I know this author personally and have heard part of his story but was still in awe with what he had to overcome. It is really an inspiration to all youth who find themselves in the same situation. It also is an inspiration to those people working to help these kids to know their efforts are rewarded.
A wonderful yet sometimes sad story. Very encouraging for every young person of color or with disabilities. The main takeaway is that there is Hope.
Hasan Davis' life is one of overcoming extreme difficulties. His story points out how youth's successes are related to adults believing in them. The need for educational systems to address learning differences as he told his story was very clear. This book is inspiring and motivating for anyone concerned about social justice issues. Once I started reading it I could not put it down.
Hasan's compelling story renews one's belief in the human spirit, in the power of hope and love to transform lives. Hasan used his education, including his law degree, to help others, to inspire them to become "hope dealers," to give young people a chance to achieve their dreams. This is a story we need now more than ever, a story that educates us to truly see each other and help each other. President Obama has recently spoken of how reading books during his lifetime has given him "the ability to get in somebody else's shoes." This book should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand and challenge the forces that work against a young black man growing up in America. It is an eloquent reminder that the waste of a human life diminishes everyone. "We are tied together in a single garment of destiny, caught in an inescapable network of mutuality. And whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. . . . I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be." Martin Luther King, Jr.
This excellent book portrays strength, tenacity, and the importance of a mother’s loving advocacy and relentless courage— her’s and his.
The book begins with the author confronting inexplicable racism on the inner city streets—tragically, all too topical today. In his schooling, he struggled with ADHD and a learning disability, which were unaided by the educational systems. Fighing against the odds, today, Hasan Davis, is an influential leader, working within government to transform arcane government policies for youth.
Read this book. It will leave you inspired and renewed, as it did me.
